Counseling Center in Context

As previously stated, the overarching goal of the internship program is to train ethically responsible psychologists who have the requisite knowledge, skills, and awareness that are the foundation of the competent practice of professional psychology in a pluralistic society. We strongly believe that in order to be competent, psychologists must have an understanding of multicultural principles and a commitment to embracing and working with individuals who are different from themselves. The Counseling Center works to ensure a supportive and encouraging learning environment through the recruitment and retention of staff and trainees who are committed to diversity, social justice, and training.

We understand that multicultural competence is a work in progress, and we are always striving to understand ourselves and others better. Our investment in growing both personally and professionally may best be reflected by some of our recent campus involvement as well as in our staff development activities. A brief selection of what we do:

Representation on campus-wide committees valuing diversity and social justice

  • Suicide Prevention Task Force (campus wide suicide prevention with special initiatives for LGBTQ and Veterans)
  • T-Net (Transgendered Health Care Network) – MUCC staff co-founded
  • Campus Programming Council (campus wide programming intended to improve collaborative efforts)
  • Council on Violence against Women Committee

Involvement in programming/outreach to under-represented groups and on topics of diversity

  • Parent panel for Academic Retention Services
  • Involvement in annual Queer Monologues and Vagina Monologues
  • Invited diversity discussions for Greek Life
  • Presentations on mental health issues for specific groups (e.g., crisis intervention with students from the Gaines Oldham Black Culture Center, Multicultural Center, Women’s Center, and LGBTQ Resource Center; Programs focused on breaking stigma around mental health and help seeking designed to reach international and non-majority students.)
  • Participation in events hosted by diversity partners (e.g., Fall Fest hosted by the Gaines Oldham Black Culture Center; International student resource fair; numerous events hosted by Black fraternity and sorority groups).
